General Auditions – MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET
Casting Ages 8-80 years
By chance, Kris Kringle, an old man in a retirement home, gets a job working as Santa for Macy’s. Kris unleashes waves of good will with Macy’s customers and the commercial world of New York City by referring parents to other stores to find exactly the toy their child has asked for. Seen as deluded and dangerous by Macy’s vocational counselor, who plots to have Kris shanghaied to Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital, Kris ends up in a court competency hearing. Especially at stake is one little girl’s belief in Santa. In a dramatic decision, the court confirms Kris as the true Santa, allowing Susan and countless other children to experience the joy of childhood fantasy.
Director: Steve Arcidiacono

Character Breakdown
FEMALE:
DORIS (LEAD; mid 20s-early 40s) Doris is the victim of a bad divorce and takes it out on almost every man she meets. She has a strict sense of right and wrong and is trying to bring up her daughter the same way, but deep down she just wants to be loved.
SHELLHAMMER (Supporting, 20+) “Shelly” is Doris’s smart right hand, handling many details, but she’s also afraid of her own shadow and nervous about her job.
SUSAN (LEAD, 8-12) loves her mother but has also bought into her adult ideas. She wants to be a kid, but also doesn’t want to displease her mother. Loves Fred and Kris and gradually becomes a wonderful little girl.
BAG WOMAN (Cameo, 40+) Helps set the meaning of Christmas early. Will also be Ensemble.
RICH WOMAN (Cameo, 40+) Big time snob who looks down on the Bag Woman. Will also be Ensemble.
DUTCH GIRL (Cameo, 8-12) has a wonderful scene with Kris and needs to be able to do a convincing Dutch accent. Will also be Ensemble.
MALE:
FRED (LEAD, late 20s-mid 40s) Fred is the principal love interest character in the play. He is a lawyer and Doris’s next door neighbor; he’s also in love with her. He cares deeply for her daughter, Susan, and hopes he can break down Doris’s resentment of men. At the end of the show, he legally proves that Kris is the one and only Santa Claus and also wins Doris’s heart.
KRIS KRINGLE (LEAD, 40+ [older is better], a real beard is a BIG plus) Kris IS Santa Claus! Every nice thing you’ve ever heard about Santa is embodied in this character. Jovial, kind, full of love for everyone and everything, he is the essence of the human condition – kindness, love, and compassion for one another. Doris and Fred become his big project, and he succeeds.
DR. PIERCE (Supporting, 30s-50) A smart and kind Psychiatrist who is very fond of Kris and, deep down, believes Kris IS Santa Claus. He does everything he can to prevent Kris from being committed.
DRUNK SANTA (Cameo, 30+) very funny role for a guy who can play a slobbering drunk. Will also be Ensemble.
DUNCAN (Cameo, 50+) the antelope/reindeer keeper at the zoo who vouches for Kris at his trial. Will also be Ensemble.
MARA JR. (Cameo, 8-10) the DA’s son who testifies that Kris is Santa per the DA. Will also be Ensemble/Elf.
MALE OR FEMALE (preferred actor sex is listed but will cast either):
SAWYER (M, Supporting, 35+) a wannabe psychologist who’s really nothing more than an HR clerk. Has many neurotic tendencies and should be the patient, not the “doctor.”
JUDGE HARPER (M, Supporting, 55+) a nice judge running for re-election but caught in a no win situation – having to decide if Kris is the REAL Santa Claus.
HALLORAN (F, Supporting, 50+) the judge’s political advisor. Gruff, no nonsense, only cares about winning the election.
MARA (F, Supporting, 30+) the prosecuting attorney. Positive that there’s no Santa until forced to admit the possibility of him existing.
FINLEY (F, Supporting, 25+) the judge’s bailiff. Very professional and organized.
MACY and BLOOMINGDALE (M, Cameos, 60+) the owners of the major department stores in the country, bitter enemies brought together by Kris. Will also be Ensemble.
AL and LOU (Any, Cameo, any age) Postal workers who figure out how to get rid of all of their Santa mail. Will also be Ensemble.
ADDITIONAL CHILDREN – used for the Santa line as well as Elves and Carolers.
ELVES AND CAROLERS will be cast from the Ensemble. Ages 13 and up
