One embarrassing moment. A parade of eccentric visitors. A world of hidden desires suddenly exposed. In Steve Martin’s fast, funny farce The Underpants, Louise Maske’s accidental mishap turns her apartment into a battleground of social performance, forcing her to choose between the roles imposed on her and her own autonomy.

AUDITION INFORMATION:
Please prepare a 90 second comedic monologue (not from the show).
Please bring your calendar of all known conflicts between August 30th, 2026 and December 30th, 2026.
Rehearsals will generally be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, with additional Sunday rehearsals as mutually scheduled. Some flexible scheduling is available during the early rehearsal period. Full attendance is required during the final three weeks of rehearsal (11/8/2026–11/25/2026) and for all performances.
Non-Equity/Non-Union. Range: $75 – $200 stipend paid at the end of the run.
CASTING: Actors of all races are strongly encouraged to audition for every role.
Theo Maske (Male-presenting, 30s–50s) – A rigid, conservative, no‑nonsense man who embodies the values of his time. Panicked by the incident and determined to keep moving upward in the world, he performs authority and control, trying to dominate the room through his words and presence.
Louise Maske (Female-presenting, 20s–early 30s) – A young, attractive wife beginning to recognize her own agency and desires beyond her marriage to her rigid, older husband. Her accidental public embarrassment sets the story in motion and forces her to confront the roles imposed on her.
Gertrude Deuter (Female-presenting, 40s–50s) – The Maskes’ nosy upstairs neighbor. Lives vicariously through Louise and eagerly encourages her to step outside her comfort zone, performing the role of confidante while pushing Louise toward impropriety.
Frank Versati (Male-presenting, 20s–40s) – Presents himself as a romantic poet, becoming enamored with Louise after witnessing the incident. His presence brings theatricality, fantasy, and heightened desire into the apartment.
Benjamin Cohen (Male-presenting, 30s–40s) – A skittish, anxious man enamored with Louise because of the incident. Desperate to protect both Louise and himself, he performs a nervous, self‑preserving, and jealous kind of heroism.
Klinglehoff (Male-presenting, 60s–80s) – An elderly widower. Old‑fashioned, prudish, and easily shocked by impropriety; he performs rigid respectability and becomes the “control group” for Louise’s emerging power.
The King (Male-presenting, any adult age) – A regal figure in full royal attire. Arrives for an administrative purpose, though he may have other things on his mind; he performs authority while hinting at something more.
