This searing one-act drama, first presented on the BCP stage 20 years ago, showcases the story of a fire captain who enlists a writer to help him write eulogies for his fallen comrades after the September 11th attacks. The two strangers, from different worlds, connect as they craft tributes, revealing the personalities of the firefighters and exploring themes of grief, connection, and the meaning found in ordinary lives. A not-to-be missed Second Stage production with just two performances.

CHARACTERS
JOAN: Writer. “Neither cold nor weepy, she is someone who has long used irony as a defense, and that irony is gradually worn down over the course of the play, as she is given the opportunity to experience more direct emotion.” Age range: 40ish.
NICK: Fire captain. “Nick may say that he is uncomfortable in using language, but he obviously has considerable powers of expression. Every word he utters counts, and not a syllable of his lines should be swallowed or muffled. He savors language, and whenever possible, the humor beneath it.” Age range: Late 40’s.
