Pop/Rock Vocalist Lelica Debuts EP ‘Without A Warning’

by Patricia Bradford

To say that Hackettstown, NJ resident Lelica Palecco has been through a lot in her 28 years would be an understatement. The singer-songwriter-recording artist reflects on these experiences in her new, eight (8) song debut EP album that she describes as her most honest and personal writing to date.

“Without A Warning,” the second release from the Long Valley native, showcases her growing maturity as a writer, as well as her impressively versatile vocal range for the first time on Friday, May 6, 2011 at 8 p.m. The event takes place at The Dark Horse Lounge in Morristown, NJ.

“My songs are relatable to so many people on on a variety of levels,” said soulful/contemporary recording artist Lelica Palecco, and “this is really the first time I’m recording and putting out my original music for the world to hear. Each song was inspired by a personal event in my life.”

From the pop opener, “Lost,” written about a friendship that fell apart over something very trivial, to the Pink Floyd/country-esque title track, “Without A Warning,” written about relationship heartbreak, Lelica conveys an accessible mood without genre categorization. Even the pulsing rock track “Don’t Let Go,” transports listeners through a mutual relationship split with a mix of piano and distorted guitar.

A Difficult Past
Each original song conveys a story from Lelica’s sometimes difficult past. “Dead to Me” is an electro-rocker melody written by Palecco in reference to a tragic event in her life that’s left up to the listener for interpretation. Perhaps, the most revealing track on the EP, however, is the jangly pop “Goodbye.” So severely bullied in high school, Palecco had to leave mid-senior year to be home-schooled. This is her rhythmical eighth note groove (ala Paul McCartney) that gives her closure with a modern twist on late 60s British rock.

Lelica courageously speaks out about her bullied past. “Bullying doesn’t discriminate. It didn’t matter whether I was popular or not. I want to be able to give hope to young people to show them you can overcome adversity. I’m finally able to say ‘Goodbye’ to the image people portrayed of me and pursue my dream,” said singer-songwriter-recording artist Lelica Palecco. She lets people know if you have experienced bullying, then you are not alone and there is hope.

Skyline Productions Recording Engineer Paul Wicklife believes “Lelica’s music has heart, range, sophistication and authenticity too often lacking from today’s pop music.”

The Writing Team Collaborating with Palecco on this recording is producer, composer, arranger and guitarist B.D. Lenz. The two met when Lelica hired B.D.’s jazz group to perform at her wedding. After teaming to write a string song for her father to be played at the wedding, “Daddy Did You Know,” Palecco and Lenz struck up an instant partnership, writing and recording “Without A Warning.” “B.D. is such a talented musician and friend. It’s an honor working with someone who takes my songs for what they are. He does not change or rearrange them, but shows me how to make them into something greater that I could have imagined,” said soulful/contemporary recording artist Lelica Palecco.

“Without A Warning” is Lelica’s greatest musical accomplishment to date. “I think that people will be able to relate to my music, my life, my emotions and personal feelings,” said the rising star vocalist. What sets her apart is not just her sound and style, but the fact that her music comes from all the experiences deep, inside her soul.

About the Artist
A singer-songwriter-recording artist from northern New Jersey, Lelica began playing piano at age 5 and was writing her own songs by age 7. At 19 she was working in recording studios as a session singer and, around this time, was cast in the lead of an off-Broadway opera “Amelia Earhart.” Palecco recorded all of the character parts for a CD titled “Reflections of the Watermoon” and was later cast as the lead for the stage production of “Beauty and the Beast” at the Grange Theater House in Hope, NJ. Discovered by Marinetti Productions and Green Chapel Records, Lelica was quickly signed in 2007 and they produced her first outing “Not a Moment Too Late.” The album’s track “Come Away” was recently featured on ABC-TV’s family show, “Make It or Break It.” In 2011 Lelica left Green Chapel records to self-release her latest effort “Without A Warning.”

Lelica has provided STAGE readers with a few sample cuts of her work!  Have a listen….

1) Lost (Lelica Palecco/B.D. Lenz) – A straight forward pop/rock tune that blends piano,
electric and acoustic guitar. Lost was written about a friendship that fell apart over something
very trivial. It describes Lelica’s feelings of heartache and confusion when losing a 10 year
friendship.

2) Goodbye (Lelica Palecco/B.D. Lenz) – This is an eighth note groove ala Paul McCartney
that is a modern twist on late 60s British rock. It was written about Lelica saying goodbye to
her bullied past during high school. By letting go, she was able to fully embrace her passion
for music. Lelica’s heart and soul are poured into its bridge of vocal symmetry, suggesting a
jazz harmony.

3) Angel in the Corner (Lelica Palecco/B.D. Lenz) – An all acoustic track with just percussion,
guitar and vocals recorded in one take. It showcases Lelica’s vocal ability as a live entertainer.
Motivated by a friend’s brother diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, Lelica wrote it in an effort
to give him hope. It plays on words about the angel and devil on his shoulder, and how both
seem to be waiting for him to give up and let the cancer win.
