Thread and Gold Theatre is holding VIRTUAL auditions for tick, tick…BOOM! by Jonathan Larson, creator of RENT.

Our performances are February 4, 5, and 6, 2027 and auditions are virtual submissions only.

AUDITION FORM

Here’s exactly how to audition:
1. Click the audition form link above
2. Answer a few quick questions
3. Upload your audition video

That’s it!

For your audition, please submit a video that includes:
Approximately 90 seconds of a song in the style of the show. Either musical theatre or pop/rock songs would work. Please choose something that shows off your voice, acting, and a bit of who you are as a performer.
Please submit your audition to us via this form by Sunday, November 1st at 11:59 pm.

A few tips/notes…
-Please use accompaniment. Either a live accompanist or a karaoke/backing track is great.
-Act the song! We want to see you telling a story, not just hitting notes. And have fun 🙂
-Keep it simple. Phone video recordings in a well-lit, quiet area are excellent!

Thread and Gold is a new theatre group and we pride ourselves on creating a space where performers/crew, etc. feel safe enough to be brave. Our rooms are kind, collaborative, and full of people who love what they do. We ask that you kindly leave any negativity at the door, and come join us where we take our work seriously, but never ourselves. We care about people, and we are excited to see your audition and learn more about who you are.

Meet the Production Crew

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR: Molly Pease
LIGHTING DESIGNER: A.J. Ring
STAGE MANAGER: Will Cordaro
BAND DIRECTOR: TJ Grill

Our show will run February 4th-6th or possibly 7th. The rehearsal schedule for this production will not be very typical. Since we have such a small cast, we plan to build the rehearsal schedule around your conflicts, your lives, and try to make this a low-stress process. However, generally rehearsals will be held during the evenings on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, adding Saturday morning/afternoon rehearsals once the show gets a bit closer. Rehearsal will not be called every one of those days…those are just the options we are working with. More to be determined after casting is complete.

The Google form will close on November 1st

A bit about tick, tick…BOOM!…
Before Rent changed Broadway, Jonathan Larson wrote tick, tick…BOOM!…a funny, raw, and deeply personal musical about his own life. It’s 1990 in NYC, he’s a struggling musical theatre composer, waiting tables while chasing his big break and about to turn 30. As his girlfriend dreams of leaving the city and his best friend trades art for a steady paycheck, Jon has to decide what, if anything, he is willing to sacrifice for his dream.

With a pop rock score and traditionally performed with only 3 actors, tick, tick…BOOM!…is an intimate, high energy celebration of chasing your dreams, friendship, and choosing to make the most of the time we’ve got.

MAIN ROLES
– JON – aka Jonathan Larson. Originally performed by Larson himself. A struggling composer about to turn 30. Funny, anxious, passionate. Strong pop rock tenor. Carries much of the show and narrates directly to the audience. Basic piano skills are a definite plus, but not a requirement for this role.
– SUSAN – Jon’s girlfriend, a dancer who teaches to pay bills. Warm, smart, grounded, deciding if there’s more to life than the city. Strong mezzo belt with contemporary musical theatre/pop rock style. Preferably comfortable playing multiple characters.
– MICHAEL – Jon’s best friend since childhood, who gave up acting for a “real job”. Loyal, funny, and caring. Character carries heavy storyline that includes HIV/AIDs. Strong baritenor with pop rock style singing. Preferably comfortable playing multiple characters.

ADDITIONAL ROLES
Jon’s Father
Jon’s Agent (fatuous agent)
Rosa Stevens (Superbia producer/friend)
Judy Wright (marketing research executive / friend)
Counter Guy / Deli Guy
Karessa Johnson (fellow performer in Superbia workshop)
Roger (roommate/friend)
Our cast will include approximately 3-6 performers.

Submissions are due Sunday, November 1, 2026 at the very latest, but the earlier you send yours in, the better. The clock is ticking (we had to).
