THE WOMEN is a satirical 1936 play by Clare Boothe Luce about the lives, rivalries, and gossip of wealthy New York City socialites, notable for its all-female cast and its focus on marriage, infidelity, and female competition, with men never seen on stage. The plot centers on Mary Haines, whose seemingly perfect marriage unravels after she learns of her husband’s affair with a “jungle” salesgirl, Crystal Allen, leading to a divorce and a reversal of fortunes as Crystal becomes the new wife. The play is a sharp comedy of manners that critiques the superficiality and power struggles within high society, exploring themes of class, beauty standards, and female dependence on men.
