Rehearsal Dates: Rehearsals will be held on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday evenings beginning in mid-October. Set build days will take place on Saturdays during the day.
Tech Rehearsals: Tech week will take place from Sunday, January 3rd, until Thursday, January 7th. Actors are required to attend all technical rehearsals. Actors may not be needed on Thursday, January 7th, but are expected to have this date available.
Please refrain from auditioning if you can’t make tech week or any performances.
Summary of Show:
“Sex to Change the Course of the World” – a grad student‘s online personal ad lures a mysterious journalism student to his subterranean research lab under the pretense of an evening of “no strings attached” sex. But when a major global catastrophic event strikes the planet, their date takes on evolutionary significance, and the fate of humanity hangs in the balance. Will they survive? What about the fish in the tank? And who is that woman pulling levers and playing the timpani? An epic and intimate comedy that spans billions of years, Boom explores the influence of fate versus randomness in the course of one’s life and of life as we know it on the planet.
Cast Breakdown/Requirements:
Jules (Male Presenting, 20s – 30s)
A marine biology grad student. Hopeful, awkward, excitable, persevering. Jules wants to save the world, but is woefully unprepared for the job. This role engages intimately with Jo and disrobes to his underwear.
Jo (Female Presenting, 20s – 30s)
An undergraduate journalism student. Self-assured, skeptical, distrustful, strong. Jo has been proven time and again that the world is a bad place, but she is still looking for hope. Very physical role; Jo faints frequently, fights and engages intimately with Jules, and attempts suicide.
Barbara (Female Presenting, late 30s – 50s)
A natural history museum docent. Passionate, bubbly, vulnerable, indiscreet. Barbara loves her job more than anything in the world, even if nobody else cares.
All intense physicality, combat, and intimacy will be choreographed and tailored to the actor’s boundaries.
Content warning: language, sexual situations, physical violence, existential dread.
Due to the mature content of this show, auditions are open to ages 18+.
Location:
Auditions, rehearsals, and performances will be held in-person at the Players Club of Swarthmore (614 Fairview Rd, Swarthmore, PA 19081). Plenty of off-street parking and access by SEPTA Regional Rail and Bus. Rehearsals are three evenings a week, beginning July 16, with a full week of technical/dress rehearsals. Some of our rehearsal and performance spaces are only accessible by stairs. Please let us know if you need accommodation.
