Civic Theatre announces auditions for Roald Dahls’ MATILDA THE MUSICAL, the beloved story of a clever little girl with an extraordinary mind.
Civic Theatre is a non-equity theatre. As a community theatre, our productions are made possible by the generous participation of volunteer actors. All acting roles are unpaid. They work alongside and are supported by an experienced professional staff.

Auditions will be held by appointment only. You must have an audition timeslot to audition. Please do not show up without an appointment.

What If There are No More Audition Slots Available?
If all available audition times have been filled, we will not be opening additional time slots. We will not be maintaining a formal waitlist. If you are unable to secure an audition appointment, you are welcome to submit a virtual audition or continue checking the sign-up sheet, as cancellations may occur and appointments may become available.
Callback Notice:
Callbacks will be held by invitation only on Tuesday July 28 beginning at 6:00 PM.
We respectfully ask that you do not contact us to inquire about the status of a callback, as no follow-up is necessary.
Actors who do not receive a callback are still under casting consideration until otherwise notified.

Accessibility: Civic’s rehearsal hall is located on the second floor of the Historic 19th Street Theatre. The space can be reached by one flight of steep stairs from street level or three flights of stairs from the main auditorium. Please note that, due to the historic nature of our building, there is currently no elevator access to the second floor. If you have accessibility questions or would like to discuss accommodations, we encourage you to contact us. We’re happy to help in any way we can.
Rehearsal Dates:
Rehearsals will begin August 17, 2026
Please be prepared to list all conflicts between August 17 and October 25.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: To promote the theatre and show, select actors may be asked to perform at Art in the Park, Saturday, September 12th and at the West End Block Party & Food Festival on Saturday September 26th. Additional appearances may be added.

Character Descriptions
All characters use some form of British accent.
All age ranges listed are playable-age-ranges, Indicating the age the character appears to be. Actors of any actual age are welcome to audition if they can convincingly portray the role.
We will be casting children and adults of all ages.
All roles are volunteer, unpaid.
**Please note: The role of Miss Trunchbull is cast.**
Matilda Wormwood – Female, Age: 8-12. An imaginative girl who is clever and wise far beyond her years. She has a thirst for learning that cannot be quenched. Likable and charismatic, not annoying or pretentious. Honest and unassuming, but with a prankster streak and a strong sense of justice. Must be a very strong singer and actress, equally. Strong dancing skills preferred but not required.

Miss Jennifer Honey – Female, Age: 25-40. Matilda’s kindhearted teacher. She is tired of living in fear under Miss Trunchbull. Sweet, honest, caring, and intelligent, Miss Honey is timid but willing to become brave and stand up to bullies in order to protect her students. Must be a lovely, strong singer and a strong enough actor to make the role truly compelling.

Mr. Wormwood – Male, Age: 35-45. Matilda’s uncaring father. A slimy, greedy used-car salesman, unintentionally hilarious. Must be a VERY strong actor and comedian; improv and dance skills preferred. Must also be a relatively strong singer.

Mrs. Wormwood – Female, Age: 35-45. Matilda’s self-absorbed, negligent mother and an amateur ballroom dancer. Must be a VERY strong comedic/character actress, dancer, and singer able to carry off a sizable comedic role.

Bruce – Male, 7-14. Matilda’s classmate. He is subject to punishment by Miss Trunchbull. Bruce is a genuine, kind boy with a fondness for sweets; his spirit is broken by the Trunchbull but he bounces back stronger than ever. Must be a very strong actor and singer with monologues, scenes, and solos. Strong dance skills preferred.

Lavender – Female, Ages: 7-10. Matilda’s classmate and best friend. Lavender is squeaky and super-adorable, and what she lacks in intelligence she makes up for in enthusiasm and friendliness. Must be a very strong actor and singer with monologues, featured scenes, and solos throughout. Strong dance skills preferred.
Tommy, Eric, and Nigel – Males, Ages: 7-14. Matilda’s boy classmates. Each has important lines and solos, and some have featured dance moments as well. Strong singers, actors, and dancers required.
Amanda, Alice, and Hortensia – Females, Ages: 7-14. Matilda’s girl classmates. Each has important lines and solos, and some have featured dance moments as well. Strong singers, actors, and dancers required.
Michael Wormwood – Male, Age: 10-15. Matilda’s slightly older brother. He is a deadpan comedic character, with various lines and “bits” throughout the show. Must be a strong comedic actor. Will also be a “Big Kid.”

Ensemble – Male and female performers: Ages: 9-17 & 18+ to portray the Mums and Dads in the opening number, “Miracle,” and double in a variety of featured adult speaking and singing roles throughout the production. They also appear as the “Big Kids”, the older, tough kids at school. Strong singers, actors, and dancers required.

Audition Form:
All Actors must fill out an Audition Form PDF available HERE. Forms must be printed and brought to the audition. Extra printout forms will be available at the sign-in table. Be prepared to list all known conflicts during the entire rehearsal process and performance dates (August 17 – October 25).
Resumes and headshots are invited but not required. Photos will be taken where headshots are not provided.
Audition Requirements:
Vocal: Performers are asked to prepare 16 to 32 bars of a song in the style of the show. Please bring either sheet music with your cut clearly marked for the accompanist, or an MP3 track on a mobile device. A Bluetooth speaker will be provided.
Acting: Auditioners will be asked to cold read sides/selections of the script at the audition in a British accent.
Self-tape/Virtual Auditions:
Due by or before July 19.
