ABOUT THE PLAY
In today’s modern world, Judy and Johnny feel out of place. They’ve chosen to give up the trappings of the Internet age and live life like it’s 1950 allover again, but “Nostalgia ain’t what it used to be…” How can they cope when the fantasy of domestic bliss clashes with cold hard reality? Issues of marriage partnership, identity, and traditional gender roles swirl in this halcyon dream of yesteryear where rules and routines become a love language all their own. “An original, sometimes unsettling look at the masks people put on in order to conceal their pain.” The Evening Standard. WhatsOnStage raves“…sharp, funny, and strikingly perceptive play,”

AVAILABLE ROLES
We’re casting six actors total: four female-presenting and two male-presenting.

JUDY (Mid–Late 30s/F): A whip-smart housewife who has left her work as a high-powered attorney to start a life as the perfect wife/domestic goddess. She genuinely enjoys the tasks of homesteading, loves her husband, Johnny, and has herself convinced that she adores living as a 1950s housewife, and that this arrangement is in fact working. Above all, she’s aware life outside is full of misery and wants her perfect fantasy to continue. She’s prepared to go to any length no matter how passively-aggressive to keep this unexamined dream humming right along.

JOHNNY (Mid–Late 30s/M): An impressionable real estate appraiser who may not necessarily have chosen to be the sole breadwinner of the household. He loves his wife Judy and, for her sake, tells himself he’s also happy with this arrangement as a perfect reflection of a good married couple in 1950s suburbia. Above all, he wants his partnership with his wife to be authentic and happy.

FRAN (Late 20s–Early 40s/F): Judy’s neighbor and close friend. She’s one of the unfortunate wives who has to work, she is a costume designer for various productions. Judy is quirky and her style perplexes Fran a bit, though she continues to want to maintain their friendship.

MARCUS (Late 20s-Early 40s/M): Fran’s husband and a friend of Johnny and Judy’s. He gets along well with Judy and wishes his wife would be a bit more like her, embracing the housewife life and letting him be “the man” of the house.

Sylvia (60s–70s/F): Judy’s mother, who was a feminist pioneer and functional anarchist who raised Judy partially on a commune. While she loves her daughter, she is disappointed in her life choices and wishes Judy understood what exactly she has chosen for herself by signing on for this 1950s housewife fantasy.

Alex (Late 20s–Mid 30s): Johnny’s new boss, who unexpectedly is a woman. She’s sharp-witted, beautiful, and a great conversationalist over cocktails. She is considering promoting Johnny and wants to get to know him better.

We are actively seeking a cast that represents the diversity of our surrounding communities. We will consider actors for all roles regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity or presentation, or body type.
