Spotlight Theatre presents a SHAKESPEARE SLAM & SOCIAL to be held in the courtyard at

Saturday, August 1, 2026 — 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm
Contestant fee: $15 in advance online until 7/31, $20 at the door (cash/e-payment)

Admission is FREE for spectators and for those performing in duo scenes only.
This event is OUTDOORS, in the courtyard. There is no rain date. In the event of rain, we will move indoors.
Where is this courtyard you speak of? From Lansdowne Avenue’s sidewalk, go up stairs to the front entrance and make a left before entering. You will see more stairs going down, and there it is. Accessible entrance: behind building (through side street Lansdowne Ct.)
Prepare your best Shakespeare monologue or sonnet to compete (2 minutes maximum). A panel of judges will choose their favorite. Winner will receive a cash prize. Depending upon the number of contestants, there may be additional cash prize winners.
A limited # of slots are available for two-person scenes (3 minutes max.) for performance only. Duo scenes will not be eligible for cash prizes.
7:30 pm: social hour with music & refreshments / organizers will determine the order of performances and assign numbered slots / last-minute competitor registration (7:45 cut-off)
8:30 pm: The performances begin!
RULES and QUESTIONS:
1. To compete, perform 1 Shakespeare monologue or sonnet. There is a 2-minute time limit (firm). Although some monologues can exceed 2 minutes, we ask that you please edit accordingly. If there is highly intrusive street noise (e.g. ambulances, beeping horns, hecklers passing by, etc.) the judges will add extra time as they see fit and fair.
2. Can competitors reserve a specific time slot? Sorry, no. All registrants will be selecting “7:30-10:30” as a time slot. The order in which you perform will be determined when sign-ups close on the night of the event. Before 8:30, both competitors and duos will be assigned a numbered slot. SIGNUP LINK
3. Can competitors “reserve” a monologue, thus ensuring they will be the only person performing the piece? No. While nobody wants to see Hamlet’s soliloquy five times in a row, there is no way to ensure completely that you will not be performing the same piece as another competitor. When you register, please consider entering your chosen monologue (or sonnet, or scene) under the “Comment” sections, where it can be seen by other registrants so that they (and you) can choose/adjust accordingly. You can change your entry as many times as you wish until registration closes on August 1.
4. If I am competing, can I ALSO perform a duo scene? Yes.
5. To perform a duo scene, only 1 partner needs to complete the online form. Please include your partner’s name in “comment” box.
