What’s a Mix of Sesame Street, Puppets and Adult Themes? AVENUE Q!

by Patricia Bradford

This coming of age story is the journey of Princeton as he graduates from college and seeks his purpose in life. On his way he meets Kate Monster, Gary Coleman (yes, the Gary Coleman), Nicky and Rod (think Bert and Ernie), Christmas Eve, Trekkie Monster, Lucy the Slut and others.

AVENUE Q deals with all the issues you face as you start out in life: job, love, friends, technology, racism, sexuality, Schadenfreude and more. All of this is done through a puppet’s- eye view with a large measure of humor and great tuneful songs. The music was written by Robert Lopez (Book of Mormon, Frozen, Coco) and Jeff Marx with a strong book by Jeff Whitty.

So get in touch with your inner child/young adult. Avenue Q runs June 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 17*, 22, 23, 24*. All shows are 8:00; asterisked shows are at 2:00. Tickets are $19.00 for adults, $15.00 for under 18, $17.00 for senior citizens. Tickets are available on line at https://www.forgetheatre.org/tickets.html.

This is the school version of the show, which is PG 13 instead of R. It was adapted by the original creative team so it is true to the original. We recommend it for high school students, upper middle school grades — and beyond.
