Forge Theatre Announces: EQUUS

by Patricia Bradford

On June 6th, 2016 the world lost a great mind, a brilliant playwright, and a downright interesting human being. Sir Peter Shaffer’s work has been performed over and over and over again for decades—and for good reason. His are the plays that breach an artist’s soul. His are the lines that most actors long to speak, and his are the stories that seek to reflect us back onto ourselves with new understanding, or new questions, depending on an individual’s own experience. Equus is no exception, having been in every corner of the theatrical work in some way or another. And now, The Forge Theatre of Phoenixville, PA (recently named as “Best Theatre in the Western Burbs” according to Main Line Today) is proud to become one of those corners in April 2017.

Join psychiatrist Dr. Martin Dysart (Eric Jarrell) as he seeks to unravel the mystery behind the sudden and violent mental collapse of a young man, Alan Strang (Matt Ronzani), brought to Dysart for rehabilitation by his friend, and magistrate, Hester Solomon (Laura Cohn) after having mutilated several horses by blinding them with a metal spike. Alan initially rejects any form of help from Dysart and his Nurse (Denise McBride), but soon the pieces of his fractured psyche are pulled from his mind and set on display for all to observe.

Supported by a cast of humans and horses, the audience will see snippets of Alan’s life with his parents, Dora (Teri Maxwell) and Frank (Lenny Grossman), his interactions with stable owner Harry Dalton (Murray Kramer) and coworker Jill Mason (Tiffany Moskow), and ultimately his relationship with the horses (Brian Viksne, Christopher Ritsick, Anne Lannak, Stefanie Nicolosi, Patrick McGurk, Kat Wylde) for which he cared.

Peter Shaffer’s EQUUS will be presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH, INC. Show Dates April 14, 15, 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, 30. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8:00 PM; Sunday performances are at 2:00 PM. Adults $19. *Online purchasing has an additional fee.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the R-rated nature of the material, it is recommended that persons under 18 years of age select another wonderful Forge production to attend, as no one without proof of being at least 18 will be admitted. EQUUS content includes full frontal male nudity, partial female nudity, and simulated sex, violence against animals, religion, sacrilege, psychiatry, and equitation. Caution: The set utilizes bales of real hay in close proximity to the audience. Please help The Forge be a good neighbor by parking on Washington and Main, NOT on First Avenue.
