Auditions for ENTER LAUGHING at Players Club of Swarthmore On 9/12

The Players Club of Swarthmore will be holding auditions Monday, September 12th at 7:00pm for the Main Stage production of ENTER LAUGHING.

Audition Date: Monday, September 12th, 7:00-9:00 PM

Show Dates: January 6th, 7th, 13th, 14th, 20th, and 21st at 8 PM; January 12th and 19th at 7:30 PM; January 8th & 15th at 2:00 PM

Please be prepared to do readings from the script. This play is a comedy with lots of smart, funny, lively characters.

Character Breakdown

DAVID: a young man from the Bronx, the alter ego of young Carl Reiner; charming, funny, describes himself as sex-crazed, David has lots of talent, dreams and energy, but not much experience. David is caught between pleasing his elders and following his own path. (This character is on stage for most of the play.) Age range, 18-25.

The Women
WANDA plays the loyal, long suffering love interest for David, who does not want to get caught in the “friend zone”. She competes with Angela and Miss B. for David’s attentions. Age range, 18-25.

ANGELA is the leading lady and the daughter of Marlowe, founder of the Marlowe Theater Company in New York. She is a bit zany, and very interested in having David as her love interest on stage, which spills over to her dressing room. Angela is both comedic and seductive. Age range: 25-40

MISS B: a/k/a Laura, works as a secretary of LaTesh Hats. David obsesses over her curvy figure and charms her with his attentions and wit. Laura negotiates the deal which solve the problem of the play. Age range, 18-35.

MOTHER: a Jewish mother who want her son to become a pharmacist. Mother worries about David’s late hours and recent behavior changes. Beautifully drawn character. Age range: 40-60

The Men:
FATHER: a loving husband and father. He has remarkable patience, insight, and a wonderful sense of humor. He and David’s mother are a team. Age range: 40-60

MR. FOREMAN: an Eastern European Jewish immigrant who works hard, as David’s boss; he serves as a second father to David. Has a Yiddish dialect. Age range, 40+

MARLOWE: the leading actor in the Marlowe Theater Company. Imperious, alcoholic, and somewhat jaded, this once great actor has been reduced to taking up a collection from the audiences who attend his productions. This role requires an actor of considerable skill and range. Age range: 45+

MARVIN sees David as his hero and best friend. Marvin works for a different firm in the same building as David, but spend much time in the Foreman Machine Shops. Marvin is also in his twenties. Needs excellent comic timing. Age range, 18-25.

ROGER: A hat salesman who dates Miss B., and who sees David as a rival. He spends a fair amount of time in his underwear. Age range: 25-45

DON BAXTER is a young actor auditioning for the Marlowe Theater Company. Age range: 18-35

DON DARWIN: is a young actor auditioning for the Marlowe Theater Company. Age range: 18-35.

PIKE, stage manager of the Marlowe Theater Company. He keeps the secrets and delivers the news, good and bad. He does not smile or laugh. Age range: 25-65

WAITER serves in a dairy restaurant, small role. Age range: 20-70

Synopsis:
ENTER LAUGHING is the story of young Carl Reiner’s entrance into the world of professional theater. Set in the 1930’s, David, a delivery boy in the garment district, follows through on his creative urges to act and do comedy by auditioning for the Marlowe Theater in New York. This play is a comedy with lots of bits.
