ROOM SERVICE: Screwball Comedy Coming to Kelsey Theatre in February

by Patricia Bradford

For Immediate Release

Rehearsals are in full swing for ROOM SERVICE, a great comedy to shake off the winter doldrums. This comic delight from 1937 by Allen Boretz and John Murray is a real treat for anyone who loves theatre and especially for those who love the people who make theatre. A wheeling- dealing Broadway producer, Gordon Miller, struggles to find a backer for his new show, which he knows will be a smash hit. Holed up in a Times Square hotel with 19 hungry actors and a ballooning room service bill, he tries to forestall eviction by concocting a series of ever-more preposterous events. ROOM SERVICE was a huge smash on Broadway when it opened in 1937 under the direction of the famed George Abbot and is considered by many to be the funniest play of the 1930’s. A gem from an era great American comedy struck a chord in post-depression America among people looking for relief from their troubles and was made into a Marx Brothers movie of the same name in 1938 . But the play is funnier!
