Have you ever thought about the lives of those award winning spellers we see once a year on the TV news? Its not all dictionaries and dictation, as we discover when THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLIING BEE takes the stage at Steel River Playhouse, 245 E. High Street, Pottstown, June 4th through 14th. This award winning musical has been described as H-I-L-A-R-I-O-U-S!
Winner of the Tony and Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, this fast-paced show will have you laughing, sympathizing, and thinking “is that a real word”? Our six competitive spellers are joined by audience members to match wits to see who will emerge as the new champion. Along the way we experience the angst of the overachiever, the pressures of growing up, and what happens when adults don’t quite leave their own childhoods behind. According to The New York Times SPELLIING BEE is “irresistible, riotously funny and remarkably ingenious – gold stars all around!”
Featuring a funny and touching book by Rachel Sheinkin and a vibrant score by William Finn, we’re delighted to welcome back Deborah Stimson-Snow, founding Artistic Director of Steel River Playhouse, who will direct this show. The cast includes Lauren Hope Gates, Steve Reazor, James Barksdale, Emma Muller, Anthony Vitalo, Emma Burrus, Madison Devlin, Sebastian Antonio, and Steve Carrasco.
Talkbacks will be held on opening night Thursday, June 4 and our closing on Sunday, June 14. Please join us on Sunday, June 7 from 12 to 2:30 for a community event featuring games and contests to have a little spelling fun of your own before the show. Admission is free and tickets to play games are $1 each or $10 for 15.
