The Road Company proudly presents its next musical theater adventure, WEST SIDE STORY: a modern interpretation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet set in New York City. The notorious West Side is the battleground of two eminent gangs: the Sharks and the Jets. Tony, formerly of the Jets, falls for Maria, sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks. Love blossoms and the drama unfolds as the two pursue a romance forbidden by the stigma of being from different worlds.

The two star-crossed lovers meet in the midst of gang violence. The Sharks, a band of Puerto Rican youths–some freshly immigrated to America–violently and aggressively clash with the Jets, a group of Caucasian miscreants. After a troubling bit of violence, the two gangs agree to council on neutral ground. Unbeknownst to both groups, the previous leader of the Jets and the sister of the current leader of the Sharks are falling for each other in the dark alleys of the city. It’s only a matter of time before the two are found out, and the landscape changes forever.
Opening on Broadway in 1957, the show has had a healthy life, running over 700 performances on its initial release, and boasting a film, two separate Broadway revivals, and a score of Tony Award wins and nominations. The Road Company production of this romantic musical tragedy is directed and choreographed by Jodi Raditz.
