Tiny Dynamite Productions concluded its first run of A PLAY, A PIE AND A PINT this week with THE CHING ROOM, produced by Inis Nua Theatre Company and directed by Tom Reing. The one-act comedy by Scottish playwright Alan Bissett takes a hilarious look at the contemporary club-culture etiquette of drug dealing in the men’s room.

When struggling poet and inept adulterer Rory urgently needs to use the restroom, he is thwarted by Darren, a pusher who has set up office in the club’s only stall. Their ensuing 50-minute conversation around a toilet results in an odd camaraderie through cocaine and poetry. Under Reing’s fast-paced direction, actors Adam Altman and Eric Scotolati make every moment count, mastering the side-splitting rapid-fire dialogue, the unerring Scottish accents, and the quirky personalities of their characters, whose facial expressions and body language relay as much as their words.

The four-week four-play series at the Red Room of the Society Hill Playhouse proved so popular with its sold-out audiences that Tiny Dynamite founder and Artistic Director Emma Gibson has decided to extend the happy-hour run; she will remount the first show, PEACHES EN REGALIA, for three more dates in November, from 6-7 pm, at Fergie’s Pub. If you missed it the first time, be sure to catch this funny fusion of four eccentric characters, whose hapless lives come together in a delightfully happy ending around the eponymous dessert. You’ll not only see a first-rate play, with delectable direction by David O’Connor and equally delicious performances by Altman, Anjoli Santiago, Miriam White, and Newton Buchanan, but will also enjoy a traditional British meat or vegetarian pie and a beverage–all for the recession-savvy price of $15.

A PLAY, A PIE AND A PINT will continue in March 2012, with a new batch of four one-act plays that changes weekly, and continues to make Philadelphia happy hours happier than ever! Tiny Dynamite also plans to take the series outside the city, to a still-to-be-determined venue on the Main Line.
