WHAT TO PREPARE:
–Please prepare about 32 bars of a song, (roughly 1 minute), in the style of the show that best demonstrates your vocal and acting abilities. Please bring sheet music for the accompanist.
–Please wear clothes you are comfortable dancing in, as there will be a dance call at the audition. There will be a single large group dance call at each audition. Participants will either perform their singing portion first and then wait to dance, or begin with the dance segment and then wait to sing.
To sign up for an audition time slot, or if you have any questions, please email Katie McGrier at auditions.facetime@gmail.com with your resume, headshot or photo, and your preferred audition date and group (Group 1 arrives at 6:30 and sings first, Group 2 arrives at 7:30 and dances first). If you are interested in auditioning but unable to make one of the initial audition dates, please email Katie to see if something else can be arranged.

Character Descriptions (All Roles are Non-Union, Unpaid)
The Cat In The Hat
The all-knowing narrator – the Cat pops in and out to move the plot along, make observations and add a Seussian allure to our show. We are looking for an actor of any gender to make the part their own. There is an opportunity to bring your own flavor and personality to this part. This role is an opportunity to put your special skills to work!
Gender: any
Vocal range top: F2–F4 (higher keys available if needed)
Jojo
The Mayor’s young kid, an inquisitive young Who, their imagination can’t be contained to the small world around him. Their “big thinks” are always inadvertently getting them into trouble, but they have a great heart. They become friends with Horton and bond over being outsiders in their communities.
Gender: any
Vocal range: Ab3–C5
Horton The Elephant
The main protagonist, Horton is kind and consistently willing to help others, to a fault. Horton is extremely loyal and will go the extra mile (literally) to help his friends. He’s also misunderstood, and he doesn’t necessarily fit in with the other jungle animals.
Gender: male presenting
Vocal range top: A2– F4
Gertrude McFuzz
Horton’s neighbor. Gertrude is shy, kind, nerdy and self conscious about her one feather tail. She develops significantly over the course of our story, first thinking she needs a bigger tail to gain her self confidence, and finally realizing that it was in her the whole time.
Gender: female presenting
Vocal range: F3–F5
Mayzie LaBird
Mayzie is a beautiful, self-centered and confident bird in the jungle. She provides a toxic foil to the shy sweet Gertrude.
Gender: female presenting
Vocal range: G3–Eb5
The Sour Kangaroo
The self-appointed ‘leader’ of the jungle. She is like the head of an HOA; people listen to her because she always has something to say about the way the forest should be. She is unabashedly sassy and soulful. She has a small child who is her mini me.
Gender: female presenting
Vocal range: F#3-F5
Jungle Creatures:
The Wickersham Brothers: 3-5 actors of any gender. The Wickersham Brothers are monkeys who act as hench monkeys for the Sour Kangaroo. Will dance and sing in a boy band style. Must be able to sing in harmony.
Bird Girls: Will be played by our featured dancers; they are Mayzie’s girl gang.
Young Kangaroo: We are interested in casting a young actor of any gender in this role. It will likely be split between two performers for different performances.
Yurtle The Turtle: Judge at the trial in act 2. Has gravitas.
The Whos:
Mr. Mayor & Mrs. Mayor: Jojo’s parents: featured singers that must be able to sing in harmony.
General Genghis Khan Schmitz: Leader of the military school where Jojo is sent. Should be played very much in the style of a Seussian drill sergeant.
