Old Academy Players welcomes new talent! Please note that we are a non-profit community theater and that all roles are performed on a volunteer basis. If you are auditioning for a show, please complete the Audition Form [https://oldacademyplayers.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/OAP-Forms-for-web_Audition-Form.pdf] in advance of the audition.
Auditions will be conducted in Carfax, the building next to the theater, because it is easily ventilated. If it becomes crowded, people can wait outside. Everyone will remain masked and distant except when people are reading together, when they will stand 15 apart and lower their masks.
It is our expectation that everyone involved in this production will be fully vaccinated by the time rehearsals start. We have no understudies, and so cannot risk any of our actors becoming ill. In addition, some of our actors are children, and we cannot ask them to rehearse or perform with adults who are not vaccinated. We want to be able to say that we are a “fully vaccinated company.”
5 African-American females (one is a child)
3 white females (one is a child)
1 African-American man
2 white men
Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Please contact the directors for specifics.
Actors auditioning for roles that require singing (see below) should come prepared to sing a few lines of:
— Women: “Jacob’s Ladder”
— Men: “Over There” or “Yankee Doodle Dandy” or “Down by the Old Mill Stream” or some other tune that you are familiar with.

Brief Synopsis of Show: Set in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1918, Wedding Band is an unsparing tale about the consequences of a decade-long romance between a black seamstress and a white baker.
Julia and Herman have loved each other devotedly, enduring harsh disapproval from whites and scorn from blacks. As they confront the impossibility of ever living a normal married life, and as Herman falls ill with the Spanish flu, Julia gradually reaches out to forge affirming bonds of solidarity with her community.
Julia Augustine: an attractive brown woman about thirty-five years old. She sings. She never leaves the stage.
Fanny Johnson: the landlady, the self-appointed, fifty-year-old representative of her race. She sings.
Lula Green: forty-five and motherly
Mattie: Teeta’s mother. In her thirties. She sings.
Teeta: a girl about eight years old
Princess: a little white girl, six years old, always moving, hopping, running, leaping, skipping, jumping, jumping rope
Nelson Green: a rather rough-looking muscly fellow with a soft voice and a bittersweet sense of humor
Herman: white, a strong, forty-year-old working man. His light brown hair is sprinkled with gray. He sings.
Bell Man: a poor white, about 30 years old, but time has dealt him some hard blows
Annabelle: white, in her thirties, with a slightly mincing air of fashionable delicacy. She might be cheerful if she were not ashamed of her size.
Herman’s mother: (this role has already been cast)
