Brief Synopsis of Show: Sam Shepard takes a macabre look at one American Midwestern family with a very dark secret. When Vince brings his girlfriend, Shelly, home to meet his family, she is at first charmed by the “normal” looking farm house which she compares to a “Norman Rockwell cover or something”–that’s before she actually meets his crazy family–his ranting, alcoholic grandparents (Dodge and Halie) and their two sons: Tilden, a hulking semi-idiot, and Bradley, who has lost one leg to a chain saw. Strangely, no one seems to remember Vince at first, and they treat him as an intruder. Eventually, however, they seem to accept him as a part of their violently dysfunctional family.
Dodge (55+): Dying Alcoholic who is the Patriarch of the dysfunctional family. Crabby and sarcastic.
Halie (55+): Dodge’s nagging wife, the Matriarch of family and an alcoholic. She lives in a dream world to avoid the reality of her situation.
Tilden (40+): Their oldest son. Emotionally crippled, no purpose or direction in life.
Bradley (40+): Their next oldest son, an amputee. Aggressive and emasculated by loss of his leg.
Vincent (20+): Tilden’s son. Full of life and energy. Comes to visit after a long time.
Shelly (20+): Vincent’s girlfriend. Thinks she is coming to a Norman Rockwell environment but soon becomes skeptical and determine to find out the dark secrets of this family
Father Dewis (30+): A Protestant minister. Enjoys drinking and socializing with Halie.
