THE ROBBER BRIDEGROOM
A rousing, bawdy American folk fairytale by Alfred Uhry, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Driving Miss Daisy! It was adapted from the novella by Eudora Welty. Accompanied by a string band that is integrated into the action, it is one of the only scores ever heard in a Broadway musical that is made up of traditional folk songs and dances integrated into the original songs by Robert Waldman. Since opening on Broadway in 1975, The Robber Bridegroom has gone on to become a regional favorite.
A folk legend set in the Mississippi Territory in 1795, shortly after settlers were allowed into the former Spanish territory, the show follows Jamie Lockhart whose alter-ego is the romantic ‘Robin Hood-like’ rascally Bandit of the Woods. While the Bandit courts Rosamund, who is the only daughter of the richest but dimmest planter in the country, in the woods, Jamie spurns her in town. Throw in an evil stepmother who’s intent on Rosamund’s demise, her pea-brained henchman and two brothers, the smarter of the two being a detached talking head-in-a-trunk, and you have a rollicking country romp. Adult themes.
Show Dates: June 20, 21, 22, 28, 29, 30*, July 11, 12, 13 at 8PM. June 30th is a matinee at 2PM. There is a wine and cheese party after the opening night performance June 20th for everyone attending.
