The landmark theatrical celebration of the 1960s counterculture, “HAIR: The American Tribal Love Rock Musical,” concludes the Department of Theatre & Dance’s 2018-2019 mainstage season at Rowan University with performances April 5 – 7 and 11 – 13 in Tohill Theatre on the Glassboro campus.
With a book and lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni and music by Galt MacDermot, HAIR explores the experiences of a tribe of politically engaged hippies living a bohemian life in New York City as they struggle to balance their lives, loves, and the sexual revolution with their rebellion against the Vietnam War and the conservative society of their parents’ generation.
Director Christopher Marlowe Roche honor the more than 50-year-old musical, celebrating the ‘60s counterculture and the energetic music that includes hits such as “Aquarius,” “Good Morning, Starshine,” and “Let The Sun Shine.” At the same time, the production emphasizes the still-relevant political point of view and remains relevant in today’s political climate because of issues related to war, gender, race, sexuality, and morality.
Roche is joined by a creative team including choreographer Dawn Marie Bazemore, musical director Jess Arnold, scenic designer & Rowan alum Matheus Fialho Fiuza, lighting designers Alex DeSantis and Robert Thorpe, and costume designer Natalia de la Torre, plus a cast of 26 student performers from across the region.
This production includes partial nudity, adult language, sexual situations, mature themes, strobe lighting, smoke effects, gun shot and explosion sound effects, and may not be suitable for all audiences.
Performances of HAIR are April 5, 6, 11, 12 and 13 at 8:00 p.m. and April 7 at 2:00 p.m. Tohill Theatre is located in Bunce Hall on the campus of Rowan University, Route 322 in Glassboro, NJ.
