An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box.
When it opened in 2005, The New York Times called the show “effortlessly endearing” while Variety called it “generously warm-hearted.” The musical was based upon C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E, an original improvisational play created by Rebecca Feldman and performed by The Farm, a New-York-based improvisational comedy troupe. The show is unique in that audience members in the lobby are given the chance to sign up to participate in the show as “spellers” and the audience is treated as if they were the audience of a fictitious spelling bee.
The original Broadway performance received 6 Tony Award nominations, winning two for Best Book of a Musical and Best Performance by a Featured Actor. The Off-Broadway production also won three Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Book, Outstanding Ensemble Performance and Outstanding Direction of a Musical for director James Lapine. Spelling Bee premiered on Broadway at the Circle in the Square Theatre on April 15, 2005 and closed on January 20, 2008 after 1,136 performances and 21 previews.
