Steel River Playhouse announces auditions for the 2018-2019 Season Opener: SWEENEY TODD The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Make an appointment for an audition by contacting casting@steelriver.org.

Attend the dark, witty and Tony Award-winning tale of love, murder and revenge set against the backdrop of 19th century London! Steel River is looking for 9 principals and a large active ensemble.

Initial Audition Dates:

Saturday, June 2 – 2p to 6p
Wednesday, June 6 – 6p to 10p

Callbacks by Invitation:

Saturday, June 9 – 2p to 6p

Show Dates: October 5 – 21

Please make an appointment for an audition by contacting casting@steelriver.org. You only need to attend one night of the initial auditions. Callbacks will be by invitation only.

To Prepare:
• 16-32 bars of a song, please being the sheet music for the accompanist, clearly marked. Please no recordings of accompaniments or a capella auditions.
• 1-2 minute monologue – preferably one that show cases a British or cockney accent.
• Your resume
• A headshot (any picture is fine)
• A Steel River Audition form that will be provided to you when you make your audition appointment.

Cast Requirements:

Sweeney Todd – a wrongfully imprisoned barber seeking to right the wrongs committed against him. He is Johanna’s father, singularly focused on taking bloody revenge. Our story’s tormented protagonist.
Male, any ethnicity
Age: 40 or over
Vocal Range: F2 to Gb4

Mrs. Lovett – an entrepreneurial and amoral meat pie shop owner. She falls in love with Todd and turns his desire for revenge into a profitable business venture.
Female, any ethnicity
Age: 35 or over
Vocal range G3 to E5

Anthony Hope – a naïve and youthful sailor returning to London. He helps Todd return to London and unexpectedly falls in love with Johanna.
Male, any ethnicity
Age: 20-30
Vocal Range: Bb2-F4

Johanna – a spritely girl, full of innocence, constantly yearning for freedom. Todd’s long-lost daughter and Turpin’s ward.
Female, any ethnicity
Age: 18-21
Vocal Range: Bb3-A5

Tobias Ragg – a poor youngster apprenticed to Pirelli. He finds a surrogate family in Todd and Lovett.

Judge Turpin – a lecherous public official who portrays himself as a sanctimonious authoritarian. He takes advantage of his position in the city and is responsible for imprisoning Todd.

The Beadle – a pompous public official. He is deeply loyal to the corrupt Turpin.

Beggar Woman – a deranged and schizophrenic woman who harbors a dark, surprising secret.

Adolfo Pirelli – a flamboyant Italian barber; a charlatan with a secret past.

Age: 30 or over
Vocal Range: B2-C5

ENSEMBLE: Large group of 16-20 with varying voice parts and appearances

Patricia Bradford holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. She has performed, directed and produced theatre throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. Ms. Bradford is founder and Managing Artistic Director of Bare Stage Theatre. Leading STAGE Magazine has become a consuming passion - one which combines her many artistic skills, theatrical contacts, web development and digital marketing abilities.
