DON’T DRINK THE WATER: Woody Allen Comedy Kicks Off the 50th Season at Barley Sheaf

The Barley Sheaf Players of Lionville cordially invite you to attend the opening production of their 50th season: DON’T DRINK THE WATER by Woody Allen.

While most people know Woody Allen for his films, he also has enjoyed success in the theater. Don’t Drink the Water was his first Broadway play and it was such a success it was later adapted for film and television. This farce takes place behind the Iron Curtain in an American Embassy, where The Hollanders seek refuge after being accused of espionage by the local authorities. The laughs come fast as chaos ensues inside the Embassy and they wonder how they are going to get out.

To celebrate their 50th season, The Barley Sheaf Players are performing a show from each of their five decades as a theater company. Stevie Tagye was part of the original production of DON’T DRINK THE WATER in 1988 and is excited to be part of the cast for this special restaging.

As the producer for the 1988 production, Stevie remembers needing to teach one of the leading ladies how to iron for a scene and that they actually used a live rabbit in the show. In the current production, Stevie is on stage in the role of the Chef and Countess Bordoni. As is typical with this long time Barley Sheaf member, she is also part of the production team serving as the costume designer.

While those who have been to Barley Sheaf before may recognize Stevie and one or two other familiar faces in this cast, there are several actors in the cast who have never been seen on the Barley Sheaf stage before, including Tim Courtney as Axel Magee.

So join The Barley Sheaf Players for this special season and come laugh at our season opener Don’t Drink the Water!

Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 8pm, from September 8th through the 23rd, with a special 2pm matinee on Sunday, September 17. The Barley Sheaf Players are located at 810 N. Whitford Road in Lionville. Tickets may be purchased online at www.barleysheaf.org, or by calling the box office at 610-363-7075.
