Prepare Ye the Way: GODSPELL is Coming to Footlighters Theater

by Patricia Bradford

On March 24th, Footlighters Theater brings to its historic stage the incredible revival production of Stephen Schwarz’s beloved GODSPELL, a masterful retelling of the original sensation, injected with contemporary references and dazzling new arrangements.

The first major musical theatre offering from three-time Grammy and Academy Award winner, Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, Children of Eden), GODSPELL took the world by storm in 1971. Boasting a score with chart-topping songs such as “Day by Day,” and a book by visionary playwright, John-Michael Tebelak, it was later made into a feature film, toured the country in local theaters and schools for decades and then triumphantly returned to Broadway for its 40th birthday in 2011. GODSPELL is an experience that continues to touch audiences worldwide.
Director, Melody Dougherty, assisted by an enthusiastic and energetic production staff, has brought together an eclectic and talented group of “apostles” (led by Robert Lewis as Jesus and Sean McDermott as Judas) and added a big dash of 21st Century culture and a stage full of creativity and energy. Mix in a rock band led by music director, Rich Lewis, and the stage is set for an evening of music, fun and a timeless message of love and peace that you will be certain to take home with you.

The production runs March 24th through April 15th, including shows on Good Friday and Easter Saturday. Friday and Saturday shows are at 8:00pm; Sunday matinees at 2:00pm. Opening Night (March 24th) is “Industry Night” – $10 seats will be set aside for patrons bringing cash and a theater program with their name inside. Friday, March 31st is “College Night” with $10 cash seats available to college students with ID. (First come, first served) All shows offer the limited opportunity to sit on the stage during the production for a small $5.00 upcharge.

Performances take place at Footlighters Theater in the heart of Berwyn (58 Main Avenue), within walking distance of the Berwyn train station and an assortment of excellent restaurants.
