Old Academy Players Presents Hilarious MEN ARE DOGS

by Patricia Bradford

Old Academy Players presents the hilarious MEN ARE DOGS by American playwright Joe Simonelli, directed by Terri Bateman and produced by Christopher McCollum and Michelle Moscicki. Show dates are April 21, 22, 28, 29, 30, May 5, 6, & 7, 2017. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 pm; Sunday matinee performances are at 2 pm.

SPECIAL APPEARANCE: It is our pleasure to announce that the playwright, Joe Simonelli, will be part of the talk back held on Saturday, May 6 at 2 pm (private theatre party) and 8 pm (public performance). Joe Simonelli has been writing and performing in plays on the Jersey Shore, Staten Island, and Manhattan since 1998. His plays are performed around the United States and Canada on a regular basis. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was exposed to the New York theatre scene at an early age. Kudos to Joe and his play MEN ARE DOGS. Phil Dorian of the Two River Times states, “Simonelli displays an adept comic touch…the group therapy sections alone are worth the price of admission!” Asbury Park Press reported, “Audiences are doubling up with laughter.”

Dr. Cecelia Monahan is the no nonsense therapist running a support group for single and divorced women from her home office. She listens to a number of relationship problems from her unusual circle of patients as she deals with the unsolicited advice of her live-in and loving mother on subjects ranging from dating to cooking recipes. The doctor, however, is not above using some unorthodox methods of her own such as hiring out of work actors to role play with her patients. It is only when Cecelia meets the new substitute package delivery man that the doctor must learn to practice what she preaches!

What do you get when you mix 6 women, 2 men and group therapy sessions? Just what the doctor ordered! The stellar cast includes: Chris Cutrufello as Rose, Christopher Wunder as Tony, Leah Lawler as Allison, Marisa Block as Jane, Michele Scutti as Cecelia, Natalie Bonacci as Loretta, Norman Burnosky as Bob, and Tiffany Brink as Madeline. You will leave the theater with laughter in your heart, and the understanding that love sees no gender or social status, and that happiness can also be yours for the taking…and giving!
