South Jersey resident and art teacher, Lily Doyle, way laid off in June 2010, a casualty of statewide budget cuts to public schools. Her school’s art program was slashed along with her position. After teaching an extremely successful art program for 16 years, she suddenly found herself without a job. Over the course of a year Doyle searched diligently to find a new teaching position. Eventually she realized that the record number of teachers out of work, in addition to plenty of new education graduates entering the field, made the odds of finding a new position-especially in the arts-nearly impossible.
“I came to the conclusion that when life gives you lemons, make LEMONADE!” Doyle said. She decided to take a leap of faith and open her own business- UNDERCOVER ARTIST LLC.
“It’s part art, part party and part entertainment!” Doyle described. In addition to being an art teacher, Doyle has also facilitated workshops in acting and improvisation. She has also freelanced as a home interior mural artist and as a graphic designer.
“Any ideas that are creative, fun and visual come to me very easily. My friends look to me as their ‘go to’ person for everything from planning birthday parties to corporate team building events.”
“I created UNDERCOVER ARTIST because I wanted a business where I could combine my personality with my skills as an artist, actor and teacher. I imagined a social gathering where people can laugh with their friends, explore their creative side and go home with their very own hand-painted artwork. People need this kind of escape, and in today’s economy, the cost of my painting session is quite a bargain. I am so grateful that all of my professional and personal life experience has brought me to this point. I hope folks enjoy UNDERCOVER ARTIST as much as I do.”
A happy addition to this story was that a very determined group of parents from Doyle’s previous school fought and succeeded to bring back the art program along with Doyle’s teaching position. She returned this school year teaching on a part-time basis.
“It’s really funny how life works out, isn’t it?” Doyle mused.
