Church on Sunday …Cool? You Bet!

by Lila Achuff

On Sunday, December 12, I had the privilege and unforgettable experience of attending one of four sold out Christmas concerts presented over the weekend at the Westminster Presbyterian Church located at 10 West Pleasant Grove Road in West Chester, PA.  There was a waiting list of 100 people who were hoping to get to see and hear the Chancel and Bell Choirs at this beautiful, glorious Church.  Maybe next year, good weather, a huge outdoor screen, sound, blanket seating ….  It’s truly a concert for all!  BTW, tickets are free … you just have to hustle, i.e., hurry, to get them.

EXTRA-ORDINARY, MOVING, SPIRITUAL, TEARFUL, JOYFUL, PROUD!  And all this under the stellar direction of Robert (Bob) F. Morris with Glenn Kinckner,Associate Director and Accompanist, and Ron Bellamy, Handbell Director.  (Bob, you are a hoot!  And it’s a joy to be in your presence!)  This year the concert, entitled “We Wish You Christmas”,  featured the members’ favorites from 25 years of leadership under Bob.

In 1991 the Choir began with 20 members and has grown to a membership of 110 today; the newer church is only 15 years young.  Following a recent partnership with the Kennett Symphony Orchestra (Mozart’s Requiem), we can expect more collaborative performances of “great choral master works” in the next three years.  The Chancel Choir has sung at the National Cathedral (July, 2008) and at the United Nations (July, 2010).  They did a European tour in 2007 and have another coming up in June.  I’m free in June, in case you need yet another coordinator. J  Every year the Choir does a spring concert too … coming up … Sunday, March 20, 2011, 3:00 & 6:00 PM.  Children and Youth choirs will be featured also.  Terrific!  Last year they did Broadway songs … I was in heaven, in church!

The Chancel Choir of the Westminster Presbyterian Church will be performing at Longwood Gardens Thursday, December 16 at 7:00 and 8:00 PM.  The performances are included with admission to the Gardens.

I Wish You Christmas …
